আদিম যুগের মানুষ কৃষিকাজ জানো না। বনের ফলমূল খেয়ে তারা জীবন ধারণ করতো। পরবর্তীতে কৃষিভিত্তিক সমাজ প্রতিষ্ঠার মাধ্যমে পুরনো পাথরের যুগ শেষ হয়ে মানুষের যাযাবর জীবন অবসান ঘটে। বিশ্ব সভ্যতার অগ্রগতির পিছনে মানুষ যুগ যুগ ধরে পরিশ্রম করে গেছে। বিশ্ব সভ্যতার অগ্রগতি সাধনের পিছনে মিশরীয় ও সিন্ধু সভ্যতার অবদান অনেক।
মিশরীয় সভ্যতার অবদানঃ মিশরীয় সভ্যতা উত্তর আফ্রিকার পূর্বাঞ্চলের একটি প্রাচীন সভ্যতা। প্রাচীন দেশ মিশরে খ্রিস্টপূর্ব ৫০০০ থেকে ৩২০০ অব্দ পর্যন্ত নীল নদের নিম্নভূমি অঞ্চলে এই সভ্যতা গড়ে ওঠে। মিশর প্রাচীন সভ্যতায় বিভিন্ন গুরুত্বপূর্ণ অবদান রাখে। রাষ্ট্র ও সমাজ গঠনে মিশরীয় সভ্যতা গুরুত্বপূর্ণ অবদান রেখেছিল। প্রাচীন বিশ্বসভ্যতায় মিশরীয়দের মত ভাস্কর্যশিল্পে অসাধারণ প্রতিভার ছাড়া আর কেউ রাখতে সক্ষম হয়নি। মিশরীয় সভ্যতার অন্যতম প্রধান বৈশিষ্ট্য ছিল লিপি বা অক্ষর আবিষ্কার। নগর সভ্যতা বিকাশের সঙ্গে সঙ্গে মিশরীয় লিখন পদ্ধতির উদ্ভব ঘটে।
মিশরের আর্থসামাজিক অবস্থাঃ মিশরের অর্থনীতি ছিল মূলত কৃষি নির্ভর। উৎপাদিত ফসলের মধ্যে উল্লেখযোগ্য ছিল গম, যব, তুলা, পেঁয়াজ পিচফল। ব্যবসা-বাণিজ্যে মিশর ছিল অগ্রগামী। মিশরে উৎপাদিত পণ্য অন্য দেশে রপ্তানি হতো। বিভিন্ন দেশ থেকে মিশরীয় স্বর্ণ-রৌপ্য ইত্যাদি আমদানি করত। মিশর নীলনদের দান। নীলনদ না থাকলে মিশর মরুভূমিতে পরিণত হতো। নীলনদে জমে থাকা পলিমাটিতে জন্মাতো নানা ধরনের ফসল। তারা পিরামিড তৈরিতে পটু ছিল।
সিন্ধু সভ্যতার অবদানঃ সিন্ধু নদের অববাহিকায় অঞ্চলে গড়ে উঠেছিল বলে এই সভ্যতার নাম সিন্ধু সভ্যতা। পন্ডিতের মতে খ্রিস্টপূর্ব ৩৫০০ অব্দ থেকে খ্রিস্টপূর্ব ১৫০০ পর্যন্ত সিন্ধু সভ্যতার উত্থান পতনের কাল। সভ্যতার ইতিহাসে সিন্ধু সভ্যতার একটি পরিকল্পিত নগরী ধারণা দিয়েছে। সিন্ধু সভ্যতার যুগে মানুষ সমাজবদ্ধ পরিবেশে বাস করত। সিন্ধু সভ্যতার অদিবাসীরা উন্নত ধরনের নাগরিক সভ্যতায় অভ্যস্ত ছিল। রাস্তাঘাট পাকা আর পরিষ্কার পরিচ্ছন্ন রাখা হতো। বাড়ির সামনে বিশাল খালি জায়গা রাখা হত। নিরাপত্তার জন্য শহরে সৈন্য মোতায়েন থাকত। সিন্ধু সভ্যতার অধিবাসীরা দ্রব্যের ওজন ও পরিমাপ পদ্ধতির উদ্ভাবক ছিল। তারা দাগ কাটা স্কেল দিয়ে দৈর্ঘ্য মাপার পদ্ধতিও জানতো। ভাস্কর্য শিল্পে সিন্ধু সভ্যতার অধিবাসীদের দক্ষতা ছিল। তারা ধর্মীয় ও ব্যবসা-বাণিজ্য প্রয়োজনে সিল ব্যবহার করত।
সিন্ধু সভ্যতার আর্থসামাজিক অবস্থাঃ সিন্ধু সভ্যতার অর্থনীতি ছিল মূলত কৃষি নির্ভর। তাছাড়া অর্থনীতির আর একটি বড় দিক ছিল পশুপালন ও বাণিজ্য। কৃষি ও পশুপালনের পাশাপাশি মৃৎপাত্র নির্মাণ, ধাতুশিল্প, বয়নশিল্প, অলংকার নির্মাণ, পাথরের কাজ ইত্যাদিতেও তারা যথেষ্ট উন্নতি লাভ করেছিল। এই উন্নতমানের শিল্প পণ্য বিক্রয়ের উদ্দেশ্যে সিন্ধু সভ্যতার বণিকরা বিদেশের সঙ্গে বাণিজ্যিক যােগাযােগ রক্ষা করে চলত। বণিকদের সাথে আফগানিস্তান, বেলুচিস্তান, মধ্য এশিয়া, পারস্য, মেসােপটেমিয়া, দক্ষিণ ভারত, রাজপুতনা, গুজরাট প্রভৃতি অঞ্চলের সঙ্গে বাণিজ্যিক যােগাযােগ ছিল।
